Never Forget Where You Came From…

My children and former colleagues might say: “Never forget where you came from” is my favorite quote, whether I’m parenting or mentoring.  I’ve always found a grounding perspective when I reflect on where I once was and the journey to where I am today.  The people that I shared life with along the way, the mistakes that I made, the moments that I celebrated, the times that I grieved, and the blessings that I received have all shaped who I am.  

From a career standpoint, remembering what it was like to learn how to prepare a tax equalization from scratch or how it felt when my voice was first included at the table helped me in relating to the next generation of colleagues that followed behind.   As careers grow, it can be challenging to embrace humility and pay forward the same or better efforts and patience that was afforded to us early on.  Hence my constant reminder to “Never forget where you came from”.  

When I remember where I came from, I’m grateful for those that played a lead role along the way…

My parents, Cla and Janice, raised four children on a teacher’s salary and were our biggest fans.  Though we may have not been well off financially, I had the “richest” of childhoods and learned the value of time versus money.  My parents were present, consistent, loving and put family first.  I’m thankful for their unwavering support.

My children, Brenan, Erin Beth and Emy, are members of the unofficial “Raised by Accountants” club, sacrificing extra hours of mom-time each tax season.  Yet, they never complained and I’m thankful for their strong values, work ethic and independence.  And while I’ve had a rewarding career, my job as a mother has been the greatest joy of my life.

Susan took a chance on me in February 1999 and never looked back.  She taught me everything I know about international tax, team management, empowering leadership, trust and loyalty.   I’m indebted to her as my work partner, but even more as an exceptional friend.

Jim welcomed me to his team in January 2005 and taught me not only trust taxation and administration but effective leadership.  It was a privilege to work for someone who was never “above” any task.  His values of teamwork and compassion for client service, that truly served the client first, were remarkable.

Mike offered his extraordinary gift of mentorship and wisdom, giving wings to this next chapter in my life and career.  I’m grateful for his encouragement, time and patience.  The example he set is admirable and inspirational. 

Bob and Zoe, my incredible neighbors on Banks Mountain, have shared their love of our beautiful land with me for nearly two decades.  All credit goes to them for my very meaningful business name and keeping our road drivable.

My former colleagues embraced my innovative and direct approach and were always willing to go above and beyond to serve our clients.  I was known for already planning for the next tax season before the current one had even kicked off.  My teammates joined alongside and never failed in getting us to the finish line of each tax season and the start of the next.  I’m grateful for their friendships, guidance, and support over all the years.

My former clients, some of whom I served for 18 continuous years, have provided me treasured experiences with evolving tax issues and laws that have shaped the services that I provide today.  I’m thankful for their trust and confidence.

And to my future clients, as I embark on this new endeavor, I’m grateful our paths have crossed and look forward to the opportunity to serve you.  I will never forget our journey…
